The Department of Biological Sciences has a focused commitment to student education in synergy with internationally recognized research programs. We strive to be on the cutting edge of the successful integration of teaching and research in a broad diversity of biological disciplines.

Through teaching, research and mentoring we provide a learning environment that transforms students into well-informed citizens and prepares them for a broad range of career paths. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality educational experience for all students. We continue to expand our research capabilities while retaining a strong focus on student participation in research and development of partnerships within and outside of the university.

Our students pursue careers as biologists in the public and private sectors, or graduate studies in biology or medically oriented fields, including pharmacy, podiatry or veterinary science. Our alumni include teachers, basic and applied research scientists, environmental biologists, geneticists, conservation biologists, wildlife biologists, foresters, fisheries scientists, pollution control agents, and marine biologists, just to name a few. Successful conclusion of a 4-year project.

In 2021 Dr.  Mario K. was awarded with a University Innovation Fund to develop cheese and yoghurt varieties in MMUST.  Several cream cheese and yoghurt varieties were developed by students of the Department of Biological Sciences and especially the MMUST YOGHURT brand received great acceptance and demand across campus. Together with the most ambitious student Joseph Mwangi and a German investor, Dr. Mario founded KAMA Dairy Ltd. which gives employment to BSc Biochemistry and BSc Biotechnology graduands, as well as intern positions for continuing students. Currently KAMA Dairy Ltd. negotiates a MOU (memorandum of understanding) with MMUST to ensure the supply of the beloved yoghurts to campus as well as further training of upcoming student generations.
