Physics Department Receives Equipment Worth Kshs. 5.4 Million From Stem Power Inc.

MMUST’s Department of Physics on Friday, 7th October, 2022, received assorted Virtual Arm equipment worth Kshs. 5.4 million from STEM Power Inc. Massachusetts, USA. The equipment, earmarked for virtual computer and electronics laboratories, was received by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo, and Dean, School of Natural Sciences (SONAS), Dr. Joseph Owino. The Chairman- Department of Physics, Dr. Maxwell Mageto and Senior Lecturer of Physics, Dr. Francis Gaitho were also present during the handover of the equipment. The donation will boost Science learning in the University.

Prof. Shibairo thanked STEM Power for the donation, noting that this will strengthen MMUST’s flagship area of science and innovation. He commended the efforts of the University staff who enabled the donations to be made to the University.

“The virtual laboratory is the future. The evolving nature of STEM demands for the use of technology and has replaced the traditional ways of doing things. The University will ensure that the equipment is well utilized,” stated Prof. Shibairo.

The assorted items included; a 3D printer, server with a capacity of 48 computers (currently connected to 32 monitors), software for learning and internet cables. The department is expecting the second and third consignments of electronics in three weeks’ time. 

The Director Curriculum Review and Development, Prof. Judah Ndiku who was representing the DVC, Academics and Student Affairs (ASA), Prof. Hussein Golicha, pointed out that the equipment will enhance learning in the University especially in Physics.

Dr. Owino expressed his gratitude to the Vice Chancellor for signing the Memorandum of Understanding with STEM Power. He acknowledged that Physics is a practical oriented science and the equipment is a huge boost to the department in terms of practical work.

“The department will carry out outreach programs in secondary schools to develop a positive attitude of the students towards studying sciences to the University level as well as influencing students from other schools to join the University and study sciences,” said. Dr. Owino. Additionally, he revealed that Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) lacks technological booster and the equipment will support it.

Dr. Mageto, appreciated United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for receiving the equipment from STEM Power on behalf of the University and enabling free importation of the equipment.

Certainly, donation of the key equipment will enable the University to offer quality training to its learners and therefore, churn out products who not only meet the demands of the market but lead the rest in the marketplace.
